Pro Merita Academy and Self Design Learning Community: A Partnership
Self Design Learning Community (SDLC):
- A Mission to empower each student and family to direct their own learning path.
- An internationally recognized and award winning leader in the field of education including the 'Prime Minister's Award for Excellence in Education Innovation.'
Pro Merita Academy:
- Nurturing and supporting needs of the “high performance” student.
- Offering cross-training and enrichment opportunities for achieving young women and men.
SDLC and Pro Merita Academy have common ground in the following areas:
- We recognize the merit of creating a supportive climate in which children can explore their interests and passions to the fullest.
- We encourage and support family involvement and awareness - a key element of a child’s education.
- We encourage students to plan and set goals for themselves.
- We understand that a student’s passion for sport, dance or other endeavours is a key part of the learning experience.
- We recognize that learning occurs in every aspect of living, wherever it occurs whether it be at sports competition, dance festivals or music performances.
- We recognize that studies in nutrition, anatomy, psychology, injury prevention and recovery will enrich the student’s experience.
- We recognize that cross-training can enhance a student’s extra-curricular passion and offer exposure to yoga, gymnastics, swimming, personal training, Pilates, and spinning.
Key to this is parent involvement in reporting their child’s learning, wherever it occurs: dance festivals, sports competitions and everywhere in between.
Programs
Classroom Learning:
Students learn in a classroom setting with mentorship by BC certified teachers (Learning Mentors). Working with individualized programs (each student has their own Learning Plan), students are provided a challenging, focused and comprehensive academic program. With “high achievers” in mind, we offer a comprehensive selection of curriculum. However, the selection of curriculum can be tailored to the individual needs of students with the guidance and assistance of the Learning Mentors.
Students will be challenged to think for themselves, to be accountable for their studies and deadlines, and organized in their thoughts in order to communicate clearly and well. In short, students will be given good foundations to help meet the challenges of the future and succeed no matter what their goal.
Curriculum:
In addition to the core academic requirements of Language Arts, Social Studies, Mathematics and Science, students also have opportunity for study in:
Second Language
Physical Enrichment Education
Fine Arts
Technology/Life Skills
Service and Outreach
For students in High School, additional course electives in addition to the above courses are available in Sciences, Humanities, and Fine Arts including:
Biology
Chemistry
Comparative Civilizations
Contemporary Studies
Earth Science
Geography
Jazz Studies
Philosophy
Physics
Planning
Self Design and Pro Merita are continuing to look at ways to capture a student’s individual learning experiences. As such, together we work with students and their families to create a “whole life” and not just a “half day” program.
